About Curepipe Botanical Garden

Located a few kilometres from Curepipe town centre, the Curepipe Botanical Garden is one of the island’s quieter green spaces and an easy stop to include within a central Mauritius itinerary. Smaller and less visited than some of the island’s larger gardens, it is appreciated for its calm atmosphere, mature trees and cooler climate.

Created in 1870, the garden covers part of the former Mare aux Joncs natural sanctuary gradually evolved into one of the largest public flower gardens in Mauritius after Pamplemousses. Well-maintained walking paths, ponds and shaded areas make it a pleasant place for a short stroll or a peaceful pause between other nearby attractions.

Rare Trees & Botanical Curiosities

The garden is home to a variety of exotic and endemic plant species, including palms, giant trees, ferns, azaleas and rare native vegetation.

One of its most interesting botanical features is the presence of Hyophorbe amaricaulis, considered the rarest palm tree in the world. Only one known specimen of this species exists, and it can be found here inside the Curepipe Botanical Garden.
