About Jacotet Bay and Sancho Islet

Located between Rivière des Galets and Bel Ombre, Jacotet Bay offers a very different coastal atmosphere from the calm lagoons often associated with Mauritius. The scenery here feels wilder and more open, with rocky surroundings, stronger ocean waves and a quieter environment shaped by both nature and history.

Just off the bay lies Sancho Islet, a small islet separated from the shore by a narrow channel that can sometimes be crossed on foot with suitable shoes.

Many visitors stop here briefly during southern itineraries, often while travelling between Bel Ombre, Macondé, Souillac and nearby viewpoints. Depending on sea conditions, the area also attracts surfers, fishing enthusiasts and photographers drawn to the dramatic coastal scenery.

Pirates, Treasure & Old Legends

Jacotet Bay and Sancho Islet are closely linked to stories of pirates, corsairs and colonial naval battles dating back to the French and British periods in Mauritius. According to local legends, hidden treasures may once have been buried around the bay and the islet, leading to several treasure searches in the area during the 1960s.

Although no treasure was officially discovered, the stories still add a mysterious atmosphere to the coastline and remain part of the identity of this lesser-known corner of southern Mauritius.
