Chamarel Village – One of Mauritius’ Most Scenic Places
If there is one place that constantly pops up on Mauritius bucket lists, it is Chamarel Village.
Hidden in the lush South West, Chamarel is home to two of Mauritius’ most famous natural wonders - the stunning Chamarel Waterfall and the surreal Seven Coloured Earth.
-
The Seven Coloured Earth
You have probably already seen photos of it online - and yes, it really does look that unusual in real life.
Surrounded by lush greenery, this fascinating geological phenomenon features naturally coloured dunes in shades of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow, creating an almost surreal, moon-like landscape. The geopark stretches across around 15 metres of beautifully coloured dunes and is also home to a few famously friendly giant tortoises, who usually steal a little attention from visitors too. There is also a coffee shop and souvenir shop onsite if you feel like taking a little break.
-
Chamarel Waterfall
While visiting Chamarel, you will also stop for views of the spectacular Chamarel Waterfall, often considered the most beautiful waterfall in Mauritius.
Fed by the St. Denis River, three streams plunge nearly 100 metres into a dramatic gorge, surrounded by lush forests and mountains. It is one of those places where people naturally stop, take a deep breath and reach for their camera.
Black River Gorges & Alexandra Falls Viewpoint
The drive itself is part of the experience. As you travel through the scenic Black River Gorges Nature Park, Mauritius’ largest protected forest, you will pass through beautiful mountain roads surrounded by lush greenery and endemic wildlife.
Along the way, there will be a stop at the famous Alexandra Falls viewpoint, where you can enjoy sweeping views over forests, valleys and waterfalls stretching across the South West - a side of Mauritius many visitors do not expect.
Mare aux Vacoas – Mauritius’ Largest Reservoir
You may also pass by Mare aux Vacoas, the largest reservoir in Mauritius. Surrounded by forests and cooler highland temperatures, the peaceful atmosphere here feels worlds away from the beachside scenery most visitors picture when thinking of Mauritius.
Trou aux Cerfs – Mauritius’ Famous Volcanic Crater
You have probably seen this one in Mauritius travel guides too.
Located in Curepipe, Trou aux Cerfs is a famous extinct volcanic crater, measuring around 350 metres wide and 80 metres deep. Surrounded by greenery, it offers lovely panoramic views across different parts of the island on clear days and makes for a scenic stop during the journey.
Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao)
Your journey may also take you to Grand Bassin, also known as Ganga Talao, one of Mauritius’ most sacred places.
Set peacefully inside the crater of an extinct volcano, around 550 metres above sea level, this holy lake is deeply important to Mauritius’ Hindu community and is believed to be spiritually connected to the sacred Ganges River in India. Around the lake, you will find temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Hanuman, Lakshmi and other Hindu deities. Every year during Maha Shivaratri, thousands of devotees gather here on pilgrimage.
Mangal Mahadev – The Giant Shiva Statue
Standing beside Grand Bassin is the impressive Mangal Mahadev statue - and trust us, it feels much bigger in person than photos suggest.
At 108 feet (33 metres) high, it is the tallest statue in Mauritius and one of the 50 tallest statues in the world, making it a pretty memorable stop before heading back after a full South West adventure.

We had an amazing day, made even better by our driver Yash. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He gave us lots of information about the island and we felt he went over and above what he needed to do eg stopped to pick guava fruit for us to try, showed us the tree plantations and told us all about the different gods at the Hindu temple. Please pass our thanks on to him
