Discover the Unique Takamaka Boutique Winery in the Heart of Mauritius
Forget châteaux and grapes—this is winemaking with a twist! Takamaka Boutique Winery is rewriting the rules of winemaking where they are crafted entirely from luscious Mauritian lychees, grown on 50-year-old orchards in the North—pesticide-free, herbicide-free and 100% local. A visit to this one-of-a-kind winery is an absolute must!
The winery tour begins with a warm welcome from the friendly team or the oenologist himself, Alexander Oxenham, followed by a behind-the-scenes look at the one-of-a-kind winemaking process. Forget vineyards and ancient traditions—here, it’s all about innovation, passion, and a whole lot of tropical charm.
The process begins with hand-selected Mauritian lychees (sometimes called “the Chinese cherry”), chosen for their quality. Each fruit is peeled by hand to ensure the best flavour, before being placed in thermo-regulated tanks for fermentation. Using carefully chosen yeast strains, the fermentation process brings out the unique, aromatic qualities of the lychee.
Enjoy an enriching experience, complete with a short documentary and a guided tour that gives you an insight into the art of lychee winemaking. Then, treat your taste buds to a wine-tasting session featuring award-winning creations like the dry and sophisticated Tanara, the fruity Aquarel, and the decadent Eclipse. Even kids get to join the fun with a special non-alcoholic drink!
Before you leave, don’t miss the boutique, where you can snag a bottle of your favourite lychee wine. You may also find a selection of unique local products and souvenirs.
