While still relatively unknown to many visitors, Vallée d’Osterlog is one of those places you almost wish you’d found sooner. Think quiet forest trails, rare endemic plants you won’t see elsewhere, and hidden viewpoints that make you wonder how this side of Mauritius stayed so secret for so long.

About Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden

Located near Le Val in the south-east of Mauritius, the Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden covers approximately 275 hectares of sub-humid mountain forest between Montagne Lagrave and Montagne Laselle.

First opened to the public in 2014, the site was created to help preserve some of the island’s rarest endemic plants and the last remaining 2% of Mauritius’ native forest.

Fun Fact: The Vallée d’Osterlog is home to rare species found nowhere else on Earth! Researchers recently rediscovered Pandanus palustris, a plant once believed to be extinct.

What to Expect?

The garden features two main walking trails: the Cascade Tortue Loop Trail (1.6 km) and the Tambalacoque Trail (2.5 km), both allowing visitors to discover endemic vegetation, forest scenery and elevated viewpoints overlooking the valley.

Along the way, visitors may spot tortoises, fish ponds, birds, lizards and endemic plant species found nowhere else in the world. Informative plant labels throughout the site also make the experience more interesting for travellers curious about Mauritian biodiversity.

One of the highlights of the visit is Cascade Tortue (Turtle Waterfall), named after a large rock formation said to resemble a giant turtle shell.

A Wilder Experience

The Vallée d’Osterlog feels very different from the coastal Mauritius many travellers first imagine. Cooler temperatures, forest surroundings and quieter walking paths create an atmosphere that suits couples, families and nature lovers wanting a lighter outdoor experience within their itinerary.

Picnic areas and kiosks throughout the garden also make it easy to pause, relax and enjoy the scenery before continuing the day.
