Itinerary of The 5-Day Shared Luxury Catamaran Cruise along the North Coast of Mauritius

Day 1 Saturday: Grand Baie - Cap Malheureux (North Coast)

Upon your arrival at noon, you will be warmly welcomed aboard the catamaran in Grand Bay, located in the north of the island. After a briefing on safety measures and your daily schedule of the 5-day catamaran cruise, you will get to enjoy lunch onboard before the catamaran heads towards the northern tip of the island.

Enjoy sailing along the north coast until sundown, when the catamaran will dock in the lagoon of the charming coastal village Cap Malheureux bay for the night, with its famous red-roofed church standing guard.

In the morning you will have the opportunity to visit the Domaine de Labourdonnais Sugar Estate with its palace, beautiful gardens, old orchards and rum factory (as part of the optional excursions). On your way back, you will visit a world-renowned factory of model boats, which will surely leave you amazed.

After lunch on board, you will set sail to Flat Island and Gabriel Island. Depending on the meteorological conditions, you might get to enjoy a snorkelling break in the bay of Palissades or on the west coast of Flat Island. Afterwards, the catamaran will be moored in the lagoon of Gabriel Island. You will then spend the afternoon Robinson Crusoe style- discovering the beauty of the secluded and quiet place located in the middle of the calm blue lagoon, between Flat Island and Gabriel Island.

Day 3 Monday: Gabriel Island – Black River (Northwest Coast)

After an early swim and spending a beautiful morning lazing around on the beautiful exotic islets of Mauritius, you will be sailing southwest, towards the bay of Black River. This once very quiet coastal village is now an increasingly-visited spot by locals and tourists alike because of its picturesque landscapes and exquisite sunsets.

The catamaran will be docked in the Black River Bay, protected from the winds by a majestic mountain range that will be your scenery for the night. The Black River district is a good place to go shopping with several shopping centres and souvenir shops or you can choose to enjoy the buzzing nightlife in the West with the several nightclubs and restaurants present in the area.

Day 4 Tuesday: Black River (West Coast)

Then, the catamaran will sail along the southern part of the island so that you can explore the wondrous snorkelling and swimming spots of the area. Depending on sea conditions, you will either get to disembark at the mythical beach of Tamarin or explore the mouth of the Rempart River with a sea kayak.

About Flat Island

Flat Island, known as Île Plate in French, is located near Round Island, at the extreme north of Mauritius, about 11 kilometers north of Cap Malheureux - the mainland's northernmost point. It houses one of the two working lighthouses in Mauritius.

Flat Island is the largest of the northern islets, an area of 253 hectares and is mostly flat, aside from a single hill topped by a lighthouse. North of Flat Island is Pigeon Rock, a spectacular bare rock stack, where many seabirds come for nesting.

Flat Island is a very popular venue for snorkelers, and also offers great dive sites. The island offers beautiful beaches with crystal clear turquoise water.

Optional Excursions Package (at a supplement) :

Day 2: Visit of Domaine de Labourdonnais Sugar Estate

Tour of the Château de Labourdonnais

Situated in the North part of Mauritius, in the heart of a fertile orchard and splendid garden lies The Château de Labourdonnais, where endemic plants and large varieties of exotic trees grow in harmony.

Inspired by Italian neoclassical architecture, the residence stretches out on two levels. The house was built mainly from teak wood and has a double colonnaded gallery. The layout of the house follows that of the private mansions of the nineteenth century, with a central hallway leading on one side to the dining room and on the other to the main lounge. The bedrooms are situated upstairs.

After visiting the château, you can stroll through the lush gardens and old orchards where large fairways invite you for a promenade, displaying the horticultural wealth of the region.

Visit of the Château de Labourdonnais Gardens and Orchards

As part of the tour of the gardens you will get to see hundred-year-old mango trees, spice trees such as nutmeg and clove, as well as several exotic fruit trees such as the pomme jacot, the sapote, the jamalac and the Kythira plum.

Rum Factory - Rhumerie des Mascareignes distillery

The Rhumerie des Mascareignes was built in 2006. A new industry on the domain which exemplifies the diversification of the sugarcane industry. The distillery operates during the sugarcane harvest.

As part of the visit of the distillery you will learn about the old techniques of agricultural rum and the production of this treasured spirit.

Two different rum labels, Rhumeur and La Bourdonnais, produced by the distillery are available at the tasting bar and the boutique at the château.

Day 4: Chamarel Visit: Coloured Earth, Rum Distillery and Lunch

Seven Coloured Earth

The “Seven-Coloured Earth” of Chamarel is a geological curiosity and a major tourist attraction of Mauritius. It is a small (7500 m2) area of strikingly bare landscape located within a large, dense forest. The earth is particularly unusual as it was created by volcanic rocks that cooled at different temperatures, allowing the earth to form beautiful patterns of colour on the exposed hillsides. When visiting the park, you will be able to walk between the many sand dunes and contemplate this unique sight.

Rhumerie de Chamarel

Situated in the South West part of Mauritius, in the heart of a fertile valley lies the Rhumerie de Chamarel which is surrounded by vast sugarcane plantations growing in harmony with pineapples and other tropical fruits. Displaying a unique sense of warmth and authenticity, the Rhumerie de Chamarel Distillery welcomes visitors for an all-encompassing tourism experience ranging from a guided visit of the distillery and rum tasting to a tasty meal at L’Alchimiste, its own stylish and creative “A la Carte” restaurant. As a visitor of the Rum Distillery you can marvel at its unique design which blends harmoniously with the spectacular surroundings where wood, natural stone and water provide a sense of communion with nature.
